Following the historic Canada-EU Leaders' Summit in Montréal, parliamentarians from both sides of the Atlantic look at what comes next.
On 29 and 30 October 2026, Canada and the European Union held a historic Leaders' Summit in Montréal, marking a new chapter in a partnership that has grown steadily since the launch of CETA. In an increasingly uncertain geopolitical environment, cooperation between trusted partners matters more than ever. Canada and the EU share a deep commitment to open markets, rules-based trade and democratic values.
CETA, signed in 2016 and provisionally applied since 2017, has been the foundation of this relationship. Since provisional application began, two-way trade in goods has surged by over 75% and bilateral trade in services has grown by 97%. The agreement has driven innovation, enhanced competitiveness, created jobs and strengthened the resilience of shared supply chains.
Leaders have now set the direction. Parliaments will help turn it into results: scrutinizing, shaping and sustaining the partnership, and giving it democratic legitimacy and momentum on both sides of the Atlantic.
This session closes the 44th EU-Canada Interparliamentary Meeting (IPM). It brings together Members of the European Parliament and Members of the Canadian Parliament to discuss Canada-EU relations following the Leaders' Summit, and the role of both parliaments in the relationship.
What comes next for Canada-EU relations, and what role will parliamentarians play in shaping it?
